U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand Visits ITC

Canandaigua, NY, May 16, 2009

On Saturday, May 16th U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand visited Infotonics for the first time.  The junior senator for the State of New York toured the facility and learned how ITC is working with our federal agency partners – specifically the DoD Army Research Labs and the DoD Telemedicine & Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) – to develop new technologies addressing areas of critical national need.

Specifically, ITC has worked for several years with Army Research Labs to develop miniaturized technology for multi-spectral and hyperspectral imaging.  New visualization technologies for field deployment and utilization by the warfighter can provide mission critical information not currently available.

Similarly, ITC is starting a new research program with TATRC to develop smart prosthetics devices to improve the quality and performance of lower-limb prosthesis.  As more injured soldiers survive loss of limb, often due to enemy deployment of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), there is a need to provide a quality lower-limb replacement.  These prosthetics need to offer the injured soldier the opportunity to return to active duty and reintegrate as seamlessly as possible into society.  Through a partnership with Clarkson University, ITC is working to develop new sensor technologies that will address immediate needs with respect to fit and comfort.
